Earth Celebrations

Earth Celebrations

Earth Celebrations is a New York organization that stages processions and pageants in defense of the Lower East Side's community gardens. Deshuk supported it through the late 1990s and early 2000s, and these paintings come directly out of that involvement - Gaia (spelled Gia in her own titles), the Green Man, the Green Guardian, figures taken from the pageantry itself.

The group sits between her two modes: neighborhood subject matter, of the kind she had been painting since the East Village years, handled with the mythological figures that would take over her later work.
