East Village

East Village

Deshuk was part of the East Village art scene of the early 1980s, performing at Club 57 and Performance Space 122 while painting the neighborhood around her. Her method was consistent for years: photograph the people she passed on the street, then work the photographs up into paintings. What survives is less a set of portraits than a record of particular corners at particular moments - the crowd outside Gem Spa, a bookseller on Saint Marks Place, someone crossing Third Avenue.

She kept at it as the neighborhood changed around her, which is what turned the paintings into a chronicle rather than a snapshot.
